Layoff Watch, Part II

We started receiving tips yesterday that KKBRF has recently made some major cuts. According to the tips, the layoffs started in their Reno office on Wednesday with one partner and one associate being cut loose. On Thursday, they reportedly laid off three transactional attorneys and "at least" two litigation attorneys, plus staff.

Apparently, no one is sure if the (rumored) cuts are related to the (rumored) merger with Greenberg Traurig, or if the economy is to blame. Either way it sucks. This is truly a sad state of affairs, and our hearts go out to our fellow colleagues. Please post any denials, confirmations or further information in the comments.

UPDATE:
We received a follow up tip with the final body count:
4 - Litigation attorneys (2 from Vegas, 2 from Reno)
4 - Transactional attorneys (one very pregnant)
1 - Government Affairs attorney
All related staff
We also received news from one of our tipsters regarding the post-massacre meeting:
"There was a firm wide meeting at the end of the day where they said that the remaining attorneys who had not been laid off would be the firm going forward, and if we merge with GT, this will generally be our firm merging (interesting use of the word "generally" by managing partner Mike Bonner, I overheard some litigation attorneys really parsing his language on that issue...lawyers are nerds). They also said that some partners will be leaving on their own terms by April, no word on which partners. The general justification for the layoffs was the poor economy, though they noted that we have lots of money in the bank after a pretty good year last year. This year is going to be tough.
There is a lot of speculation amongst the remaining associates that more layoffs could occur, and also that a number of partners will split and open a new firm."
SECOND UPDATE  (2/20/08):
Looks like the LV Sun (finally) got around to reporting this. Many thanks to you tipsters for the scoop.

According to the Sun, the total body count was "at least nine attorneys" plus three to four support staff. The Sun was also able to get a quote from the firm:
“We did have some reductions,” firm spokeswoman Diane Gibes said. “Like so many companies across the country we were affected by the economic downturn. It’s unfortunate, but we felt we needed a leaner structure.”
"[W]e felt we needed a leaner structure?" We're sure that makes those of you who ended up on the wrong end of a pink slip feel awesome.

(Thanks for the tips, Anonymous.)

  1. Hey WWL, can we get a confirmation or statement from the firm?

  2. Well, whether you can or can't, know that they DID cancel their Summer Associate program for '09, and didn't interview anyone at Boyd. Not a huge red flag, but when you consider that they did donate a bit of money to Boyd... That was probably the first sign they were struggling.

  3. I'm at an out of state law school and they informed me that they were not hiring summer associates for summer 09.

  4. Hey, I've been laid-off too. It's kind of cool to know that I am still a prole, subject to the consequences of stupid government policies. Woohoo!

Reagan said: It's a "recession" when your neighbor loses his job. It's a "depression" when you lose yours. Well, I think we are in a depression.

    Cheers

  5. I've heard that Marquis Aurbach is cutting back at least staff if not some attorneys. But that is second-hand information - feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

  7. incorrect info about Marquis & Aurbach. Not cutting staff, not cutting attorneys.

  8. I heard that KKBR had another, larger, round of layoffs last Friday? Can anybody confirm or deny this?

  9. The KKBR attorneys "to leave in April" on their own, is their governmental affairs group, who is not happy and not willing to merge with GT. Take this for what it's worth.

  10. The KKBRF - GT merger is officially OFF. The government affairs department is not the group that is leaving. One litigation partner and two transactional partners are leaving to start their own firm, as they were asked to leave even though KKBRF had its best year in 2008 and has plenty of money in the bank.

  11. KKBRF is at it again! A large amount of the firms top lawyers are bailing and leaving the rest of the firm to fend for themselves. Top dog Michael Bonner along with several others will be going to Greenberg Traurig after all. There will only be like 12 attorneys left in the whole "mega firm" and who will suffer...the support staff who will be let go.

  12. Where was this heard-about some of the attorneys leaving and some going to GT?

  13. It cant be said where this information came from but it was very reliable. Attorneys are cleaning up files and getting ready for the move as we speak. Stand by the chips in Las Vegas will be falling.

  14. OUT OF THIS MEGA FIRM HOW CAN THERE ONLY BE 12 ATTORNEYS REMAINING? AND THE RENO AND CARSON CITY OFFICES? WILL THEY REMAIN?

  15. Can anyone confirm what is going on at KKBRF? Seems to me that if something like this was happening more people would know about it.

  16. Hard to believe some of these posts when it looks like business as usual according to the firm's website: http://blog.kkbrf.com/archives/395

  17. becoming a partner is not what you might think. that doesnt keep a firm together

  18. Well I have heard that even Tom Kummer is leaving so that with the rumor of Mike Bonner where does that leave the firm? Shouldnt they just be honest and tell us what is going on so that we can make arrangements. We do have families to provide for.

  19. do you HONESTLY think that you as the employee of the firm are the first thing on their minds? do you really think that they will put your family before theirs and give you a heads up so that you will be ensured to provide for your family?

  20. RIP, Kummer Kaempfer.

  22. I heard they are simply relocating to an office presumably to reduce overhead expenses, not merging or dissolving the firm.

  23. I heard they were dissolving with a bunch of people going over to GT. I guess we'll see what's happening over time.

  24. heard bonner and about 1/3 of the firm are headed to GT, not sure about the others

  25. I heard that Ferrario was going with them too.
