Las Vegas produces the best criminal stories. There's a good story in the Sun about the want-to-be hitman Bellagio poker dealer, who started the website hitmanforhire.net [now defunct], then bargained with his would-be-victims to see if they would pay him more than the contract to kill them, and is now on trial Ireland. (Las Vegas Sun)

Judge Sally Loehrer ruled that the Las Vegas Tribune defamed local attorney David Rivers, who is running against District Judge Jessie Walsh when the paper printed a story stating that Rivers drinks, beats his wife, lies and was born with a Hispanic name but changed it to become more Americanized . (Review-Journal) The suit has since been dismissed because the publisher agreed to print a front-page correction.

The defendants in the China Bank criminal trial must be thrilled with their choice of counsel. The Nevada Supreme Court suspended one of the defense lawyers, Mitchell Posin, for one year. However, the Supreme Court later modified its order, allowing Posin to continue trying the case after Judge Pro and the defense lawyers said in court that the suspension could wreak havoc on the slow-moving trial. Apparently, the U.S. Attorney's office didn't get the memo that a mistrial of a [allegedly] crooked attorney who cheated his clients and conspired with doctors means that the attorney is "vindicated". The U.S. Attorney's office announced it will be appealing the dismissal of the Noel Gage trial. (Review-Journal) [oh well, Noel, at least this will give you a few more months to tell the Review-Journal that the government is attacking you because you're a champion of the people]

Meanwhile, the doctor that took the stand to testify about how he conspired with Noel Gage and "consultant" Howard Awand will lose his license. (Las Vegas Now) [The Nevada State Bar might want to take note since Noel Gage is still practicing law]

We were thinking about putting together a seat by seat guide to the 2008 judicial elections next weekend and then we read Harmful Error this morning and realized there'd be no point.
