Shooting at Federal Court

Report is that there was a shooting at the federal courthouse this morning (two FBI agents shot is what we're hearing), and that the Courts (fed and state) are currently on lockdown. Who's got the 411 on this?

UPDATE:
Here's what we know ...

At approximately 8:00 AM on Monday morning Johnny Lee Wicks, a 66-year-old man, walked into the Lloyd D. George Federal Building and opened fire with a shotgun. Wicks killed 72-year-old Stan Cooper, a federal court security officer, and severely injured a 48-year-old Deputy U.S. Marshal.

The shooting started in the main foyer and continued outside. Wicks was killed across the street from the federal building. Seven U.S. Marshals and security officers were involved in the gunfire. Some witnesses say they heard between 50 to 100 shots fired.

Wicks apparently was angry about cuts to his social security benefits. May he burn in hell.

A three-block perimeter surrounding the courthouse was blocked off for much of the day. The RJC was also closed to the public for the day.

Here's a video of the incident shot by a man at the corner of Lewis Ave. and 4th St. (thanks, commenter):

Our sincere condolences go out to Mr. Cooper's family.

  2. from KXNT:

    Shooting at Federal Courthouse

There has been a shooting inside the Federal courthouse on Las Vegas Blvd.. According to Metro Public Information Officer Barbara Morgan, two possible shooters are involved, and one is down. Metro Police are also confirming that two federal agents have been shot and killed. Morgan says police are setting up a three block perimeter around the courthouse due to the investigation on a second shooter that fled. Stay with News Radio 840 KXNT for the latest on this story.

  4. I heard the RJC is also locked down

  5. RJC is locked down as well.

  6. Sounds like the downed federal agents are the marshalls at the metal detectors. I think most of them are retired law enforcement. That's a shame...those guys are so nice.

  13. RIP to the Marshal who was reported dead.

Two closings of the federal court in one week? I was greeted by a line of carbine rifle-toting officers blocking 4th st this morning. I was just thinking how this neighborhood is feeling more dangerous and maybe I should finally get a CCW...

  14. @9:32 - Agreed, those CSOs are great guys. It's sad to hear that one did not make it.

And will someone please find out who10:05 is so we can publicly humiliate him/her. How absolutely boorish.

  16. I heard its getting worse while the RJC is on lockdown someone jumped off the parking garage and committed suicide... does anyone know anything about this???

  17. I just saw it on the news...the guy appeared to be in his 50s and it's an apparent suicide. He jumped off the parking garage off Stewart. What is going today in Las Vegas?

  19. For God's sake, can the moderator please remove racist postings.

  20. 5:18 PM - racist? You mean like saying the shooter was black, and he went on a shotting rampage because his social security (welfare) was cut?

But that would be offensive, so don't expect any reports on that. If the shooter had been white and -heaven forgive - a registered Republican, this would be front-page news for a week.

    Is that racist to say?

    Taco kisses to you, sensitivo.

  21. The security guard is Stan Cooper. He is retired metro. His world evolved around his kids and grandkids. For those of you who frequent the federal court house he is the one that looks a lot like Leslie Nelson and would scan your id. He was a great and kind man.

  24. I guess we should all be glad that this incident did not take place at the RJC. There's always such huge lines there in the morning to get through security that the gunman could have popped off many many more people. Perhaps this will raise awareness and we can demand they open the South entrance up again!

  25. 8:07 makes a salient point.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I heard that one of the reasons the South entrance at the RJC was closed was because of security in that it was too hard to control two entrances. Unfortunately, I think this incident will cause the South entrance to stay closed for good.

  27. It's ridiculous to design a PUBLIC courthouse with two entrances and then inconvenience the taxpayers who PAID the the over-budge monstrosity by closing one - the one closest to public parking! It shows the complete lack of concern for citizens by the current ruling class in Nevada - public "servants." Meanwhile, their salaries and pensions bankrupt us all.

    ReplyDelete
  28. and they complain that they aren't being compensated enough. Blah!

    ReplyDelete
  29. In just a few years the maintenance and repair costs on that poorly-constructed building are going to be MONSTROUS. The RJC is a mess and has been since the days of its original planning. As a County project, it makes UMC look downright efficient and well-run. It was obsolete before it opened!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Wasn't the RJC conceived and built during the Kenny / Malone / Herrera / Kinkaid-Chauncey era? No wonder it's such a mess. We do get what we pay for here in Nevada.

    ReplyDelete
  31. How in the world does a story about a man losing his life devolve into a bitch session about local government and the RJC?

  32. @ 9:22

It's all part of the de-evolution of society. It's the law of entropy. It all fits together in the great circle of life. I compare it to Elle Woods. For example, Elle gets a boob job to attract the opposite sex (or same sex depending on her level of toxicity). Thereafter the unsuspecting victim contracts gonochlamyphilis. The innocent victim spreads said gonochlamyphilis using public restrooms (where the romantic encounter first occurred). As the disease(s) spread, one is left to wonder... what is society coming to?

  33. Seriously, this is the best we can do for judicial candidates:

    http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2010/jan/05/slew-candidates-have-already-filed-judgeships/

Perennial candidate Alf running unopposed...looks like she may finally get a seat (and god is she horrible--even after her John Peter Lee days).

I know, I know, the pay is too low to attract quality candidates, but seriously...

  34. Just heard the RJC is on security lockdown again. Anyone know what's going on?

    ReplyDelete
  35. According to my friend, there is a bomb threat at the RJC.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I will run against Allf if I have to. Some lows in the judiciary must be avoided.

  38. What is scary is I do Social Security law and this guy scheduled an appointment with our office and thank god he was a no show. his benefits were cut because he was no longer receiving CA state supplemental benefits. nothing anyone would have done for him, the law is the law and there were no loopholes. had violent history and probably had mental impairment.
