Welcome Back, Friend

Oh Liz, how we've missed you!

In what hopefully closes out the final chapter in this embarrassment of a story, the RJ is reporting that Halverson's former JEA, Ileen Spoor, won a $50,000 judgment on Tuesday in the defamation case she filed against the calorically-challenged former judge.

Halverson has been representing herself since January after two law firms she hired were allowed to withdraw as counsel because they weren't being paid. Her most recent action was to file a Notice of Appeal ... prior to the entry of judgment. We know ... shocking that she isn't familiar with procedural court rules.

The RJ reports that it is "unclear whether Halverson will pay the award." We'd love to see Spoor slap a lien on that souped-up scooter.

  1. It's just been sad for a while now.

  2. Hopeful thinking aside, there will be more to this grotesque human interest story.

Perhaps the Las Vegas Review Journal will endorse Halverson for Governor, as it did for District Court Judge. Or perhaps she and Stefany Miley will partner up and become a law firm. Don't fret, there will be more news on this beast.

Her whole being is like a horrible car wreck - you know you will be mortified by what you see, but you cannot help but look.

She might be the most ill-suited person to have taken the District Court bench in my 20 years of practice here; but there are others who for various reasons have been close: Walsh, Cherry, Saitta, Vega, Porter, Biggar, Gates, Lohrer, Cory. These are people who are either corrupt, stupid, unable to make a decision, or some combination of the three.

  3. You're missing Leavitt (Michelle, not Myron), Villani, Smith and Mosley from that list.

  4. She should have eaten that pesky JEA when she had the chance.

  5. She clearly loathes herself. She needs professional help and with luck there will be a celebrity biggest loser.

  6. We should hold our comments about the worst.judge.ever designation. Let's remember that the County is adding eight more seats to the bench. I'm sure we'll get more incompetent attorneys (who've never been in a trial) running for judge.

    Wild Wild Law indeed.

  7. Word around the campfire is that Halverson has worked out a deal with Spoor wherein she is will receive a sizeable offset on the judgment amount in exchange for an assignment of her contractual rights against Solo and the Wookie.

  8. I never really understood what all the fuss was about. Granted, I am no Chef Boyardee, but I always heard thwat it was good to warm up the frying pan before you put the meat in.

  9. @9:00 I'd go with Vega. Authentically stupid, no meaningful practice background (understand she "prosectued" traffic violations before taking the bench), has no appetite to enforce the NRCP, and avoids making any tough decisions.

Walsh is a close second. Gates might have won my vote, but I've never undrestood anything he's ever said.

  10. You should've put a warning and put the picture under the fold -- I wasn't expecting to see THAT.

Also, calorically-challenged? I think she gets enough calories.

Finally, I think her ride is a "rascal" not a scooter.

  11. Hell, just have a jedi blow up her sail barge and be done with it.

  12. I believe there may be another judgement out there against her for a large sum for her protracted litigation in San Francisco. That was where she tried to claim she resided in Cali while clerking here for ten years. She illegally sublet her rent controlled apartment to, I believe her sister or whoever. The landlord attempted to evict and Liz fought it like the Lioness she is for years exhausting all appeals and making ludicrous and frivolous arguments all along the way.

Most, if not all of this took place before she was elected a Judge. Too bad her opponents were unaware of this silly and vexatious litigation. Anyone else hear any details about this?

  13. Where is Ileen working these days??

Did she stay at the Court?

  14. Last I heard, Ileen was working as JEA for the Sr. Judge department

  15. We should have had a worst judge poll instead of that other horrible, endless poll. That would have been fun.

  16. Chavez, although gone, may have been the worst judge I have have ever had the displeasure of trying a case before. That Lizzie was his clerk made it even worse.

  17. Halverson (as well as a few other judges currently sitting) = biggest reason why judges should not be elected. The Founding Fathers understood that judges should be appointed by an elected individual or body, and that direct election of judges by the citizenry is fraught with danger. While appointment of judges does not eliminate the danger of having incompetent judges, it greatly diminishes that possibility. I am as strong an advocate of democracy as anyone, but after having practiced for 20 years in multiple jurisdictions, I firmly believe that direct election of judges results in a judiciary that leaves much to be desired.

  18. Gates was even worse. He was up on the bench during trial writing out checks for his bills and balancing his checkbook. What a nightmare.

  19. Honestly, does a judge really need to pay attention during a trial? Other than sustaining/overruling objections, they just manage the trial.
