Boyd Leaps In the Rankings!

Um ... not those rankings. This is much more important.

Boyd has jumped 13 spots in a single year and is now tied for 9th in the Second Annual Party Law School Rankings. Here are the top ten schools overall:

1. University of Arizona
2. Tulane University
3. Florida State
4. Arizona State
5. UC Berkeley
6. University of Virgina
7. University of Michigan
8. Seattle University
9. Boyd
9. University of Hawai’i

Where Boyd really shines, however, is in the specialty rankings:

The Real Party Rankings (Most Nights Spent Out)
1. Tulane University
1. Boyd
3. Arizona State
3. University of Arizona
3. University of Georgia

Life is Good (Happiest Student Body)
1. Arizona State
1. Louisiana State University
1. Stanford University
1. Tulane University
1. UC – Berkeley
1. University of Hawaii

Right on Boyd - even if you can't out-LSAT those T14 snobs ... at least you can drink them under the table!

  1. As a UCLA grad, I dispute these rankings and demand to see the statistical methodology.

  2. To follow up on the "witty/sarcastic" comment from a stream yesterday, I have to agree that this blog lost its initial allure of providing information on magic numbers, bonuses, and salaries. While I appreciate that this information might be hard to come by, that's why I come here...because it's hard to come by.

Sadly, this blog has just become a sounding board for anonymous people to slam other people in the legal community. I suggest doing a weekly post that allows people to comment on firm hiring, firings, salaries, and bonuses.

  3. @8:26:

If you think bonuses and salaries are important in this economy, you must be a law student. What is the incentive for firms to up their salary/bonus structure at this point? Just see the "magic numbers" from two years ago ... then subtract $5,000/year from the salary. That should get you pretty close.

And I believe this blog does provide a forum for such information ... it's called the "Friday Open Thread."

  4. I thought for sure Boyd would have ranked higher in the 'Least Dateable Student Body' category. It certainly has its fair share of unattractive female law students (who go on to become even less attractive female lawyers). Woof.

  5. The list is obviously flawed if BYU ranks any spot other than last. At my law school, a good number of us went out 5 to 6 nights a week, yet that school finished near BYU. Ridiculous.

And didn't Boyd finish high on the list of Mormon-friendly schools? This ranking is completely flawed.

  6. Poor Baylor. Sober, ugly, and unhappy.

  7. @9:55,

Availability of alcohol was only 10% of the total score. It's entirely possible for BYU to score well in "going out," "dateability," and general happiness, and do well in the rankings even if alcohol is scarce. (By the way, it isn't. Not even close.)

Uh, have you been to Provo? There is like one bar in that entire city and the rankings methodology is based on bars and liquor stores within one mile of the school. That seems pretty scarce and unhappy to me.

  9. I was just thinking that this is the sort of post I enjoy on WWL. Then I get to the comments and see another piss-in-wheaties comment about how this blog is going downhill.
I make $85,000, several years out of law school, in public employment. Does that help? I go home at 4:55 pm every day and haven't worked on a Saturday in 2 years. My bonus is having a job (and I get to surf the internet at lunch).
    Now everyone!!!!!

  10. 12:43: You are the reason for the budget problem in this state.

Just kidding. Isn't fun to sponge of the rest of our peers?

  11. @12:43,

Don't you have some denying of rights to pro se prisoners to do?

    ReplyDelete
  12. If you make $85,000 I know you don't prosecute for the City of Las Vegas. Those poor bastards have to get by with $60K. At what point does "the benefits are great" argument not hold water? I'm guessing anything less than $90K. Opinions?

    ReplyDelete
  13. @12:43 was your ambition to to find a job post-law school with those attributes?

If so, why bother with law school -you likely borrowed to end up getting a slightly higher paying job than your bureaucratic peers who earned 3 years of salary while you were in law school and don't have the student loan debt service you carry. If you ran the numbers, I'd suspect their net proceeds will outpace yours for many, many years.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Why the hostility toward 12:43 PM? I make more than $85k in the private sector ($110k as a 3rd year)but I don't think 12:43 made a poor career choice.

Even if he took out loans, 85k a year is better than the average job. I also assume that attorneys in the public sector get pay raises (when we're not in the middle of the great recession)and max out higher than regular public employees. The ESQ adds to the job security.

The "great benefits" argument should encompass more than health/ERISA benefits. It is my understanding that North Las Vegas and Henderson city attorneys work four 10s a week and have Fridays off. I work four 10s, then a fifth, and then a few more over the weekend sometimes. So in reality, the pay per hour isn't a lot worse than the private sector.

3:15 PM as a third-year, I'd say that $80-85k would be acceptable for the "benefits are great" argument to still hold weight. As a starting associate probably closer to $70k (depending on loans, career ambitions, etc.).

  15. 9:32 AM commented about unattractive female students at Boyd. Want to go to Stanford? 9 out of 10 women in California are beautiful, the 10th goes to Stanford.
    Can't have it all!

    Bow Wow

    ReplyDelete
  16. I would gladly put up with the Stanford ladies so long as I got a law degree from Stanford. Thank god for beer goggles.

Now I'm wondering, though, if there is some correlation between a law school's vast number of ugly chicks and their overall alcohol consumption. Compare BYU and Boyd. Hmmm...

"I object your honor...to those cankles that counsel thinks no one notices."

  17. Both BYU and Boyd have good looking women, so I don't understand 9:35's post.

  18. @3:47 - It seems many prosecutors/PDs beleive this to be their "calling" in life and thus, and cost/benefit analysis is inapplicable.

However, even for a private sector atty who gets $85 in first three years, law school is worth it. I've heard this cost/benefit speel many times. However, I don't believe it valid for four reasons: First, there are not many jobs which pay $85 out of the shoot. Sure, there are a few, but not many.

Second, those jobs which do pay $85+ do not support the numbers that law does. Even in this economy, there are exponentially more jobs paying $85 than those offered to a BA holder. (shallow market)

Third, those who do get an $85/yr job will max out much lower than a lawyer.

Fourth, your likely thinking, if only got $85 out of law school, they'll not max out very high, but if not able to lift above $120/year in law, that same person would also likely not be able to get an $85/yr non-legal job either. Thus, $85/year for the non-gifted lawyer is still better than $35/yr. to the non-gifted BA holder. (in business, etc...)

I'd rather make $85 working as a lawyer than $65 as a restaurant manager, or conceirge, or parking cars (which some in this town will clear even this year) etc.....

  19. @ 1:21

You didn't factor in student loans ahd the pay off over time. I've seen articles discussing the cost of college/professional school isn't worth it if the person invested those funds into the stock market and earned a return of 15% (pre-2009 crash average) on the investment.

  20. Even worse than the women of Boyd are the men of Boyd. Seriously, can anyone name one hot male Boyd alum? Didn't think so.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Ouch!

    - Men of Boyd

    ReplyDelete
  22. your forgetting that lawyers never retire because you can practice law FOREVER no matter how old you are. Thus extending the lifetime earnings potential of attorneys

Try working a labor intensive job, such as coal mining, and see how old you get before you just can't physically perform the job any more.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Although they are not the majority (the overall majority of lawyers are not hot period), I can name more than a few hot male Boyd alums from over the years. In fact, I married one.

    ReplyDelete
  24. One trite phrase that always makes me cringe for the speaker is that "piss in wheaties" phrase.

    ReplyDelete
  25. 5:17 - no...you didn't.

    ReplyDelete
  26. That begs the question - who are the hottest male lawyers in town?

    ReplyDelete
  27. 2:24 - Two of the hottest male Boyd alums work with me. You'll just have to take my word for it.

    ReplyDelete
  28. 1:49--And exactly who would loan hundreds of thousands of dollars to someone with no net worth at low interest so that they could invest it in the stock market?

  29. @9:24 a.m.

From 2002 to 2006? Apparently every lender on the planet.

  30. it's about time the girls chimed in on the hottest boyds.

and someone must know who the person is that married a boyd...

    ReplyDelete
  31. Like I said, no one can NAME any hot male Boyd alums. The women may be bad, but the men are far worse.

  32. This thread is hilarious. You're all such an ugly lot. The fact that you're now saying that Boyd grads are ugly on top of the daily threads saying that they're stupid just shows how insecure you all are.

The overall attorney pool in Vegas is pretty much ugly. Sure there are exceptions but let's face it long hours sitting behind a desk is not the best way to improve your appearance.

As for Boyd grads being stupid? That's just because there are so many, you're bound to run into more stupid Boyd alums than any other school because of the sheer numbers.

If there are any spelling errors in this, GO FUCK YOURSELF. As long as I can spell your name and my name then chances are I'll be signing your paycheck someday.

    Average Boyd Grad
