The RJ's Judging the Judges poll results are out, and today it's a family affair. Here's the numbers for our Family Court judges (ranked in order of retention score and without misspelling "break" ... picky, picky):

- Judge William B. Gonzalez: 60% would retain
- Judge William S. Potter: 64% would retain
- Judge Mathew Harter: 68% would retain
- Judge Jennifer Elliott: 70% would retain
- Judge Cynthia N. Giuliani: 71% would retain
- Judge Bill Henderson: 72% would retain
- Judge Steven E. Jones: 75% would retain
- Judge William O. Voy: 83% would retain
- Judge T. Arthur Ritchie, Jr.: 85% would retain
- Judge Robert W. Teuton: 85% would retain
- Judge Charles J. Hoskin: 87% would retain
- Judge Bryce C. Duckworth: 89% would retain
- Judge Gloria S. Sanchez: 92% would retain
- Judge Frank P. Sullivan: 96% would retain
This category is host to one of our favorites, Judge Moss (the Walsh of Family Court), as well as Judge Frank Sullivan, who has the highest overall retention score of any judge in any category. It's no small feet to please 96% of Nevada Attorneys (that one's for you ... spelling Nazi) ... and he's a flashy dresser to boot. Congrats, Sully!

I guess the good news for litigants in Family Court is that there is only a slightly higher than one in four chance of getting a judge whose retention rate is right at or below the failing mark.

ReplyDeleteI don't know what a "failing" mark should be, but I know I would personally be embarrassed if less than 75% of the attorneys who appeared before me thought I was worthy of retention.

ReplyDeletelooks like 10:29 thinks 60% or below is failing. I guess in school below 60% was failing, but that still would leave Judge Gonzalez with a D-, so it would be slightly lower than 1/4 with failing marks.

ReplyDeleteOK OK Excuse me that I slipped and spelled "Aweful" with an e...I'm pretty sure its because when I think of Potter and some of the crap rulings he has made effecting many children and families it makes me so irritated and angry to the point that I can't spell (that and my home computer is a Mac and corrects spelling for me)...He is a horrible human being and a horrible judge...I know not many on this website practice family law, but there will be a day when you may be in front of this giant bag of douche...have fun...you never know what you will get from one day to the next...

ReplyDeleteJudge Potter should not be retained in my opinion. He does not respect the law and acts more like a dictator in court. He decides what motions are to be heard, not fair and balanced evidence motions. Chidren suffer under his orders.

On January 4, 2012, Judge Cynthia Dianne Steel ordered two children to be released to the custody of their mother, to live with her and her fiancé who is a nationally registered child sex offender. When proof was provided to show Judge Steel this man still resides at the home she is sending the children back to, her comment was, “I don't care.” She also told him, “to move to (their new city) if you want to see your children.” Both the mother and her attorney, Patricia Ross, told blatant lies to Judge Steel’s face while in court and it was regarded as more of a joke to the judge. One case Judge Steel ruled on and is quoted saying, “I guess my experiment failed.” The children and families of the State of Nevada CANNOT continue to be used as her “experiment” projects.
ReplyDeleteJudge Pomrenze is belligerent and self righteous. She obviously does not read the motions before her. She contradicts her own decisions from one hearing to the next. God help you if you present her with a transcript… she goes nuts when presented with the facts. She has waffled her position more than once on a moderately straight forward dispute and as a result, we’ve had four hearings and no decisions. No wonder the RJ found her to be the one of the lowest rated Family Court judge currently serving.

ReplyDeleteI have been dealing with this Las Vegas Family court system since 2006. First I had the pleasure of dealing with Pomerenze. I agree with a comment said about her. She has no clue of whats set before her. She goes on her rambling (I call it) as if she thinks she is proposing some inspirational quote that is supposed to help and its just jumping out of her ass.
ReplyDeleteThen last year I had the pleasure of dealing with Harter. Our case lasted for 10 months. My Ex-husband wanted to relocate our daughters to Colorado. After an extensive evaluation and proven "Parental Alienation" from my Ex-husband and his wife, Harter went against the professional therapist that he appointed and let our daughters move to Colorado.
Judge Harter's excuse for letting the girls go was because "I didn't notify the courts every time I moved".
Now my daughters are going through massive emotional abuse from their Step Mother and our therapist reported to Judge Harter about the abuse and to CPS in Colorado. No one is doing anything.My oldest daughter is contemplating suicide. I have no faith left in this crooked system that has ripped apart my family and destroyed my daughter's spirits and hope. If anyone knows how I can get help in this matter to please let me know...

Pomrenze is HORRIBLE, she has not clue on how to be a fair judge at all. Does not read facts and accepts lies in motions and will take it out on you if you try to point out the lies. Your a judge NOT GOD lady so do your job, but my suggestion is to kick her out and get a real judge who will read motions and not get upset on the facts because they have to read.
ReplyDeleteIn April 2012, Judge Steel let a father take his two boys out of state to live. Previous to that, the mother and father had joint custody in Nevada. During the trial, the father called the babysitter (of four years) to the stand who had a testimony that was definitely for the mother (backfired on him) and Judge Steel wrote in her order that "the babysitter, mother's witness, was not a credible witness."
ReplyDeleteParents moved to Nevada in 2006 with no other family and both kids were born in Nevada. Now, the mother has to work three jobs in order to pay child support to the father when he makes mid 6 digits in salary. The father ended up moving further away from the mother after winning custody which makes it even harder for her to see her kids. This mother is the most kind-hearted person you would ever meet, she reminds you of a kindergarten teacher. The father's family is on the mother's side even. I know this, because I am one of them. Try to avoid this judge!
Judge William Potter is at it again. This guy is out of control and needs to be REMOVED from the bench from the Nevada Commission on Judicial Discipline. Potter awarded a non custodial parent child support! A mother who hasn't seen her son and the father who is raising the child has to pay the mother WTF!

ReplyDeleteThe Judge William Potter and the Plaintiff's attorney went to the same law school at Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing, MI. I believe that Judge William Potter and the Plaintiff's attorney are of the same religion also. So far Judge Potter has yelled at the defendant, and his lawyer. Judge Potter will not let the defendants lawyer speak. Judge Potter has sided with the Plaintiff with NO basis for the Temporary Order of Custody. The law in the State Of Nevada specifically states that 50/50 Joint Physical Custody as long as the parents are no unfit or abusive. The defendant in this case is neither of these, and warrants 50 50 Joint Physical Custody with Joint Legal Custody. However, this is not what is happening in this case. Follow this case closely PEOPLE
