What's Going On At KKBRF?

We've posted a few times about Nevada-based Kummer Kaempfer Bonner Renshaw & Ferrario, and chatter about the firm is picking up again.

According to rumors, Michael Bonner is making the jump to Greenberg Traurig, and he is taking a good portion of KKBRF's transactional associates with him.

Could this be the end result of the rumored merger between GT and KKBRF, or is KKBRF simply beginning to collapse? We know they recently lost one partner to Fox Rothschild, days after an event she was appearing at was pimped on the firm's blog. Things certainly don't look good.

An announcement from KKBRF is expected early this week. If you know anything, feel free to enlighten us in the comments.

  3. Word is that most litigators are going, at least one lit partner is staying, and all the land use/government affairs people are staying. What about Reno/Carson offices?

  4. good question about reno/carson-but then again nothing is ever told by them

  5. According to its website, they just recently announce some new partners. Is it just really bad timing for them?

  6. 4:20 - Considering that their former managing partner and whoever else are about to leave the firm, this doesn't look strange at all. These aren't new partners. They changed their board of directors - theoretically because the others are about to jump ship.

  7. There's only one lit partner left in Vegas- Ferrario. So where are the "most litigators" going if Ferrario is staying?

If a number of partners leave their books go with them. Unless the partners going to GT have secured jobs for the associates and staff that have been working on that business, then those people's jobs are definitely at risk.

  20. Yes, but there was no "bloodbath" as there was back in February of this year.

The support staff will be going with the leavings partners/attorneys as it states in the Sun's article.

But the "bloodbath" that occurred in February DIMINISHED the remaining supporting staff's desire to remain. These partners, again, are leaving on their own with their staff

  25. how many staff were let go in all three offices

  26. Kummer Kaempfer is not falling apart, they will continue to be successful because of all the talented people that work there. You guys need to focus all of this wasted energy on something a bit more productive.

  27. How can you even call it Kummer Kaempfer? How "Kummer" Kaempfer continue to be successful without KUMMER?! Another firm that survives this exodus might have some good lawyers, but it's not KKBRF anymore.

  28. @7:57 you dont really believe your own post now do you? Come on think about what you are saying-yes there are talented people throughout all of NV's law firms but do you really think that "KR" will survive this mess? Think before you respond

  29. It's just the nature of the beast. GT ate Quirk. Then the declining economy hurt its pocket books (like Snell, Bailey Kennedy, etc...), so it needed to eat another firm with a sizeable book of business.

Once the market recovers (in 2011) and the tourists start coming back, Vegas' commercial and transactional appeal will attract some national firms back to this market and they'll shop lift partners from other firms (i.e. - Cabot).

  30. I absolutely believe my own post. They are the best land use attorneys in Nevada. They will survive with or without the litigation and transactional attorneys. Their departure was unfortunate, but has no bearing on what they are capable of. Get a clue and take a piece of your own advice.

I should get a clue? I think that you have it the wrong way. You are protecting a firm that you are still with and that is very noble and admirable of you. We would all do the same thing but at the same time seems you are trying to talk yourself in thinking that you have job protection and apparently no one in today's economy is "job protected." Once you understand and face this, you might look at things alot more realistic and rationally. But I commend you for sticking by them. I have not pointed towards any advice, MY OPINION and we are all entitled to that is whats presented to us through present employees and the media. A Land Use Department does not make a law firm. Again, great job in your sincere attitude of dedication.

  32. Some left to go to GT but many support staff were let go and were NOT invited to go to GT.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Who were the support staff that were just let go? I know many at KKBRF and most of them were completely expendable. Probably would be a better place to work at now - if the option arose in the future. Many attorneys/paralegals/secretaries and other support staff are completely useless. If they did go to GT and continue to be useless, they will be fired without questions because GT doesn't play around. If they stayed at KKBRF then it will remain a place that is a horrible environment for anyone that actually wants to go to work to WORK.

  34. I think of lot of this is related to the way GT aquires people. They don't ever take the whole firm - they select the groups they want (the cool kids) and then leave the rest hanging in the wind.

There were rumors years ago that GT wanted to merge with Beckley Singleton, but Beckley insisted on an all or nothing deal. GT said thanks but no thanks, but did suceed in plucking Phil Hymanson and a few associates. I suspect the same thing occurred at KKBRF. GT didn't want them all, but some of KKBRF's attorneys really wanted to go to GT.

  35. hymenson - does that mean of virgin birth?

    booo yeah!

    ReplyDelete
  36. 6:02 You are right. GT does "acquire" people using a vary particular scheme.

In 1999, after 40 years O'Connor Cavanaugh in Phoenix was blown up by GT. It's an all too common story with GT. 2009 was Vegas and who's next?
