U.S. News Ranks Nevada Firms; NBJ Ranks Nevada Lawyers

How does your firm stack up? U.S. News also did a favorable write-up on Holland & Hart.

Nevada Business Journal cut through the junk and (sort of) ranked individual attorneys.

(Thanks, Tipster!)

  1. Interesting list...

  2. I looked at this list, some are well deserved, some are WTF? It just goes to show that PR goes a hell of a lot farther than actual ability.

  3. This is not a list of the "best lawyers." This is a list of the best "business lawyers." Who cares?

  4. I'm amazed that some of the lawyers on the list have 4 years experience or less.

And I'm guessing some of the bigger firms just had all their attorneys nominate the other attorneys in their firm.

I can name a few omitted attorneys who are better than some of those who made the list.

  5. I agree with 10:17. No offense to the four year attorneys on the list but I don't think you have the chops to be ranked as one of the best after four years.

With the exception of a few names it was pretty much a list of attorneys that represent corporations in some manner (and a few of their friends).

Didn't really see any criminal attorneys and only a couple PI attorneys.

  6. A Half Price Lawyer made the list, albeit under the "Stokes & Stokes" moniker, but still. How can the list have credibility when one of them made it?

  7. I graduated two years ago and have been kick ass ever since. Can't believe I didn't make the list. There is always next year I guess.

  8. The US News list, although cumbersome, seemed pretty decent. Maybe because my firm got some props (although not my practice area). But then again, most decent sized firms made the list somewhere.

  9. I think Stokes and Stokes made that list the same way Hank the Angry, Drunken Dwarf won People Magazine's online poll for the most beautiful person in the world: vote manipulation by a small group of people with a sense of humor.

  10. The Nevada Business Journal rankings are a joke. I would love to see how many votes you needed to make the list. My guess is that half the list only had one vote. Who did they send the ballots to? I never got one.

Wasn't it NBJ that was stroking ATMS's ego this summer for hiring in this economy? Of course they didn't mention that they were paying incoming associates $20/hr.

  11. The NBJ list is the same as last year - all the people vote for themselves and the large firms vote for all their lawyers. It lacks all credibility and is a disservice to the industry. More than 90% of the lawyers on the list don't belong there.

The U.S. News rankings are very, very accurate. They do their research and they partnered with the Best Lawyers in America book which is the best reference out there.

  12. Meh, I think a lot of this boils down to friends voting for friends. There are a lot of firms on here that I don't recognize and I have been an attorney in the area for 20+ years. If you are such a great attorney, why haven't we heard of you?

  13. Well truth be told to the 6 people on the list who lobbied me to vote for them and then appeared on the list (no I did not vote for "best lawyers"), apparently lobbying works. Second year associates are some of the Best 100 Lawyers in Southern Nevada. Come on.....

  14. Yes, who DID they send the ballots to?

  15. It appears we can figure out who voted since their names are on the list. Damn, now I wish I would have voted!

  16. People who voted are (a) subscribers to the Nevada Business Journal who knew that there was voting; (b) advertisers who get complimentary copies and were told "Hey there is voting" and (c) attorneys who wanted to see there name in print and lobbied their friends to name them.

  17. Will Bryson is on that list. Didn't he get fired and/or "downsized" from several firms since his own firm folded? He has had clients sue him & file bar complaints. His level of legal skill & work ethic have brought him to bankruptcy! Will Bryson? Seriously??

  18. The NBJ loses all credibility. What a bunch of clowns on the list.

  19. Why doesn't this blog list all the Nevada firms that made it into the U.S. News results? That has some credibility. [And, please, no more NBJ. What a crock.]

  20. There aren't any good lawyers in this town.

  21. There are good lawyers. Just read the NBJ and you'll see plenty of great lawyers with four years' experience. NOT!!!

  22. How about starting two separate subjects - one about how ridiculous the NBJ list is, and another about the US News rankings which are very accurate?

These two "sources" don't belong in the same discussion.

  23. I know 2 of the 4th year attorneys on this list. They're solid back office brief writers, but I don't think they could find the courthouse. Maybe they'll be top 100 lawyers one day, but I think that right now it is embarrassing for them to even be on this list. No one who knows them would ever mistake them for top 100 lawyers.

  24. If I were the NBJ, I would discontinue a list that is based solely on voting for each other and either:
    (a) Never do it again; or
    (b) Do it based on merit.

  25. There are some good lawyers on this list, but there are a number of WTF's and a number of even better lawyers who are totally missing from the list, in favor of journeymen like Bryson. This list is a classic garbage in, garbage out list. Superlawyers has lots of flaws too, but they do a better job and they try to eliminate the campaigning.

  26. Best Lawyers in America = #1
    Super Lawyers = #2
    Martindale Hubbell = #3

Having practiced law for a long time, I can say without hesitation that Best Lawyers in America is right on although certainly there will always be a few that should or shouldn't be in. Super Lawyers does a really good job too, although Top 5% isn't as exclusive as Best Lawyers.

Martindale-Hubble often rewards attorneys with more years' experience and doesn't give proper ratings to younger attorneys who are often better than the older lawyers.

  27. Agree with 4:41. I just wish I was in Best Lawyers in America.

  28. NBJ top 100 = big fail

  29. Hopefully the people at NBJ are reading all of these comments. I agree with the comments. What a crock.

  30. Just checked out the US News rankings. A little disappointed that my department wasn't rated, but overall I think they did a very good job.

  31. US News did a good job. I did a few searches. Can someone post all of the results?

  32. The US News rankings aren't really good, contrary to what everyone has said without actually looking at them. Too many firms show up with high Nevada-wide rankings simply because they have a joke Reno ranking. Congrats to all eight top tier general commercial litigation firms up there.
