It's so rarely that CD attorneys are bold enough to get a posting on the blog. That's why WWL has been so impressed with the [now dissolved] law firm of Quon, Bruce and Christensen (website closed, but firm description here).
For those of you not familiar with the millionaire CD Plaintiff's powerhouse law firm, here's the description by KLAS' Geroge Knapp (Las Vegas City Life):
Until last fall, this firm was one of the most successful in Las Vegas, specializing in sticking up for poor little homeowners who had to fight against big, evil developers. The lawyers made millions, especially telegenic Nancy Quon, who for the past few years has hosted a TV show on the city of Las Vegas channel, a program that offered advice to homeowners and homeowner associations.
So why close the doors on such a successful firm? Well, it might have something to do with the federal investigation into [alleged] corruption on local homeowners association boards. Knapp reports that:
Federal agents and Metro detectives think Quon and others orchestrated the takeover of several HOA boards in order to earn millions of dollars on construction defects lawsuits filed on behalf of residents. In addition, the conspirators allegedly siphoned away millions more by funneling all construction repairs through companies controlled by Leon Benzer, who has been, uh, very close to Ms. Quon. It's been months since any news about the HOA investigation has surfaced. Nervous homeowners and other victims are worried the whole thing has been dropped and that Quon and a few others will be allowed to sail off into the sunset to spend their loot on a tropical isle somewhere. Although Quon's law practice is now kaput, the investigation is ongoing.(LVCL)
Turns out the investigation may be picking up according to KLAS reports:
Working in concert, police detectives and FBI agents have been sifting through
mountains of financial records and legal documents seized from several HOA's
around the valley. . .
But the [alleged] scam may not be completely out of business:
At least one of her partners relocated to Florida, which is where a management
company named Platinum Services has also opened an office. Platinum managed
several of the HOA's where problems occurred.
Damn it. How dare Florida try to intrude on our unethical territory? For years Nevada's been the place where doctors and attorneys found inadequate in other states could relocate to. Florida's making a play for our brand of corrupt legal practice. The Nevada Bar better relax the ethical rules a little more.
On a serious note, the only reason the collapse of a multi-million dollar law firm [allegedly] due to a pending corruption investigation isn't the biggest story of the year is that it's a CD firm. Yawn.
[hat tip to Mr. Knapp and KLAS for the outstanding continuing coverage]
The state bar and the feds have done such a stellar and forceful job of investigating prosecuting the Medical Mafia. They're bound to just pounce on Nany, Jason, and the leaky window crowd.
ReplyDeleteInteresting. I've always joked that the majority of the con men and hustlers I've met here come FROM Florida to Nevada, but it looks like some are returning. I swear South FL has to be the shyster capital of the universe.
ReplyDeleteAgree with LE's Yawn. The CD crowd are like the goth kids from school. Nobody cares about them.
ReplyDeleteThe CD world consists of four categories: the greedy, the clueless, the suckers, and the waelthy.
ReplyDeleteGreedy Experts, Greedy Court Reporting Companies, Greedy Defense Firms.
Clueless "Experts", Clueless "Coverage" Lawyers, Clueless Contractors.
Sucker Insurance Companies, Sucker Homeowner Plaintiffs.
Wealthy Plaintiffs' Lawyers.
The associates that the defense firms have show up in court and at depositions might also fall into the clueless category.
ReplyDeleteC.D. work is so 2007. Sorry, but that b.s. practice area/racket is dead for the near future. Time to break out and read up on Title 11 of the U.S. Code boys and girls.

ReplyDeleteDon't worry, CD will make a comeback once City Center is finished.
CD is dying like the exhausted policies that sustains it. Here's to all the stupid CD defense firms that never bothered to diversify their practices and gambled that CD would be a cash cow forever.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, everyone knows a CD associates claim to be a "top biller" doesn't mean anything in the real legal world.
You guys are right, the boom is over. But damn; Canepa, Nancy Quon, Ross Feinberg, Tom Miller, et al. sure made some sweet cash from 1995 - 2008.
ReplyDeleteThe gravy train will keep going for a while.
Do the mediators fall under the category of greedy, clueless, suches, or wealthy?
ReplyDeleteLOL.....George Knap coverage is "outstanding." I needed a good laugh tonight. This is the guy who reports on aliens and UFOs....right?
ReplyDeleteI was hired in the fort lauderdale office in august of 2008. i knew within the first month that something seemed "fishy" with this office and the people seemed underhanded. i even mentioned around town this firm wouldn't last long, and "whalla". glad to see them go. God works in wonderful ways. :)
ReplyDeleteOne would think that with all the money she's made, Nancy Quon would fix her teeth.
ReplyDeleteWhy do any of you care? Wow lawyers are making money handling cases. Wow lawyers are viewed as shysters, there is something new. Big deal. Aside from a few Plaintiff's firms, people are just working to make a living. Get a life.
